Our Approach

Care shaped by five sensory pillars

Every activity, transition, and routine is designed with sensory processing in mind — because for many of the children we serve, that's not an extra, it's essential. Tap a pillar to learn more.

Visual

Calm, predictable environments that reduce overwhelm — thoughtful lighting, uncluttered spaces, and visual schedules so your child always knows what's coming next.

Auditory

Sound-conscious spaces, adjusted to each child — noise levels are actively managed, and noise-reducing tools are available for children who need them.

Tactile

Textures and materials chosen with sensitivities in mind, so touch-based activities and textures don't become a source of daily distress.

Vestibular

Movement and balance support built into the day — children who need to move to regulate have room and permission to do so, not just sit still.

Olfactory

Low-scent, intentional environments for sensitive noses — no strong cleaning products, air fresheners, or overwhelming scents in the care space.

Devon, founder of Sensory Haven, in her home office
"Every family deserves a caregiver who already understands."

Hi, I'm Devon.

Autism Mom · Certified Neurodivergent Coach · Founder of Sensory Haven

Neurodivergent kids don't need to be shaped to fit typical environments — they need environments shaped to affirm who they already are, so they have real room to thrive.

Sensory Haven didn't start as a business plan — it started with my own daughter. When she was diagnosed, I learned quickly how few people understood what our family actually needed, and how much of the advocacy, research, and emotional labor fell on me alone.

I left my federal career to focus on her — and in doing that, I found the work I was meant to do. I became a certified neurodivergent coach so I could turn what I learned the hard way into something other families don't have to figure out alone.

Today, Sensory Haven is all of it: a licensed short-term childcare program in Waldorf, MD, and self-paced resources for families I can't yet reach in person. Every piece comes from the same place — I know what it's like to be in it, and I built what I wish I'd had.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Click a question to expand it. If something isn't covered here, reach out directly — I'd rather you ask than wonder.

What ages do you serve?

Children ages 2–13. Our program is built specifically for autistic and other neurodivergent children, whether or not they have a formal diagnosis.

What are your hours?

Monday–Friday, within a 6:00am–6:00pm window. Each child receives 6 hours of care, placed anywhere within that window — built around your child's day, not a fixed start time. We're closed weekends, major federal holidays, and two weeks each in summer and winter.

How much does it cost?

$325/week, or $1,300/month if you'd rather pay a flat rate year-round (this smooths the cost evenly, including closure weeks). A one-week tuition deposit is due at enrollment, refundable with proper two-week notice.

Why is enrollment capped at 4 children?

It's intentional. A 1:4 ratio — well below the industry standard — means real individualized attention, faster identification of what your child needs, and a calmer, less overstimulating environment.

Do I need to provide food?

Yes. Parents provide their own child's food and snacks. Many of the children we serve have specific accepted foods and textures, so this avoids the friction of a child being offered something they can't or won't eat. No shared peanut products are permitted in the common space.

Can I check in on my child during the day?

Yes. We use a childcare-specific camera system with a secure, individual login for each family, active only during your child's scheduled hours. Cameras never cover the bathroom.

Is Sensory Haven licensed?

We are actively completing Maryland licensing as a registered Family Child Care Home. Enrollment is being taken now via our waitlist ahead of opening.

Do you accept childcare vouchers or scholarships?

Not currently. Payment is out-of-pocket for all families at this time.

What if my child doesn't have a formal autism diagnosis?

That's okay. We don't require a formal diagnosis to enroll — we work with families whether or not they've pursued a formal evaluation, understanding that many are still in that process or facing barriers to access it.
